Billboards Commemorate The 90th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

by: Rosario Teixeira

After 90 years three generations and several genocides it is about time that the Armenian Genocide be acknowledged by the international community at large. By ignoring, dismissing or pretending not to know, we allow it to happen time and again and become accomplices of such crimes ourselves.

It is for this recognition that in the last nine years Daniel Varoujan Hejinian has been sponsoring the Armenian Genocide commemorative billboards, which are donated by Clear Channel previously AK Media. Son of Genocide survivors himself, the genocide had a tremendous impact in his development as a person and an artist. He’s the creator and founder of Peace of Art, Inc., a non-profit organization independent of political or religious associations, that uses art to bring awareness about the universal human condition and promote peaceful solutions to conflicts

The billboards are the most effective means of reaching the public with this important message calling for recognition and denouncing the 90th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. This year the image on the billboards displayed on Mount Auburn Street and Arsenal Street in Watertown, is the eternal flame in Tsitsernakaberd Memorial, in Yerevan, Armenia, reminding us to pay tribute to the victims of the genocide and persevere in attaining international recognition. We can not change the past but we do something about the future.
